Emergency Loans through Menlo Survey Federal Credit Union (MSFCU)

AFEU has worked for several years with Menlo Survey Federal Credit Union (MSFCU, https://www.menlosurveyfcu.com/), USGS’s credit union, to allow NASA employees to become members. Credit unions typically have low interest rates for cars, mortgages, etc., and as a NASA employee, when you join MSFCU, you may take advantage of those rates.  MSFCU currently has an emergency loan program that allows members to borrow $2500 per missed paycheck.  The interest rate is 2.5%, but the interest will be waived if the loan is paid back within 60 days after the shutdown ends.  Here is the info they let us know that we could share with you:

Menlo Survey Federal Credit Union (MSFCU) is here to assist our current and eligible members during any government shutdown.  We offer a variety of programs that can help.

  • Skip-a-Payment – Members with current MSFCU loans are eligible.  (Real Estate and Visa credit card payments are not eligible.)
  • Defer Payments on New Loans – Current and eligible members can apply to refinance their non-MSFCU loans and defer the first payment for up to 120 days.  (Interest still accrues.)
  • Apply for an Emergency Loan – Current and eligible members can apply for an emergency loan.  Interest rates are 2.50% for 12 months, with ALL interest WAIVED if the emergency loan is paid off within 60 days of the government re-opening.

We are here to help.  Whether you have been a member for decades or if you open your account today, we are ready to work with you to help during a shutdown.

In addition, as a benefit of your AFEU union membership, you may be eligible for a one-time emergency low-interest loan (max amount of $2,400), under your union’s AFEU-Secured Menlo Survey Federal Credit Union (MSFCU) Emergency (ASMSE) Loan Program.

AFEU has specific eligibility requirements and restrictions regarding these emergency loans:

  • The requester must be an AFEU member in good standing for at least the past year (365 days).
  • The requester is eligible for an ASMSE loan one-time only.
  • The requester must have a FICO Credit score of at least 680 to be confirmed by MSFCU using the Credit Bureau of their choosing.
  • The maximum loan amount is $2,400 and the maximum loan duration is 13 months.

In order to initiate the ASMSE loan process, AFEU members must:

  • Complete the AFEU loan request form, available here.
  • Submit it to the treasurer (address on form) for verification of eligibility, (For a faster response, email to mdavies@afeu.org instead of mailing it to the PO Box.) who will then forward it to MSFCU
  • The employee then works with MSFCU to determine loan eligibility.

The current rate (Jan 2019) for these low-interest AFEU guaranteed loans is approximately 2.15%, but may change at the discretion of MSFCU.
